Alexandrite Collection: Our Gemstone Range with Plenty of Personality

Discovered in the 1800s in Russia, Alexandrite is a unique gemstone because of its color changing properties as a variety of the chrysoberyl mineral. It is quite a rare gemstone and highly valued. Fondly referred to as an “emerald by day and a ruby by night” due to its color changing property. The gemstone appears green in daylight or under fluorescent light and appears red when seen under a lightbulb or candlelight. This is one of the primary reasons any piece of alexandrite jewelry will create a stir and leave a lasting impression.

Does alexandrite jewelry really change color?

When viewed in broad daylight or under a fluorescent light, the alexandrite gemstone exhibits a beautiful green color, much like an emerald. When the gemstone is kept under the light of a lamp or by a lit candle, it changes color and appears a reddish- purple, akin to that of a ruby. The changing color is due to the way the chromium inside the gemstone absorbs and reflects the light. Another interesting characteristic of the alexandrite gemstone is its trichroic nature. Just like the tanzanite gemstone, which is also trichroic, this gemstone also shows off different colors when viewed from different angles. However, the color changing and the trichroic property are unrelated. In rare cases, the alexandrite gemstone exhibits what’s called a “Cat’s Eye” effect, or chatoyancy, where a thin band of light is reflected across the gemstone.

Alexandrite is considered most valuable when its color change is 100%, meaning, to the naked eye, the gemstone is either completely green or completely red.
