All You Need To Know About Ruby Jewelry

In News

Rubies have been one of the most valued and royal gems throughout history. A ruby comes from the Latin word ‘rubens’ meaning red. In India, its Sanskrit name - Natraj - translates to ‘the king of precious gemstones'. For some cultures, rubies are believed to help people be at peace with their enemies. The gem has been associated with love, happiness, power, protection and passion, which is why, even today, it is at the forefront of luxury and lore. Even the holy Bible associates the ruby with beauty and wisdom. It is also why ruby engagement rings, while unconventional, are, nonetheless, popular.

Rubies are mined in very specific locations around the world, so rarity is just another one of it’s many charms. These locations include Africa and Asia  - Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Pakistan.

Famous Rubies

Pigeon's blood red colored ruby from Burma (Myanmar) is considered to be the most valuable and rare type. Some other extremely famous rubies are:

  • Rosser Reeves Star Ruby
  • Edwardes Ruby
  • DeLong Star Ruby
  • Midnight Star Ruby
  • The Sunrise Ruby
  • The Price of Burma
  • The Liberty Bell Ruby

But the most expensive ruby ever sold was the ‘Hope Ruby’, which went for approximately $6.74 million.

Its Features

The purity of a ruby is influenced by its color. The finest ruby has the most pure, vibrant red-to-slightly-purplish-red color. The hue of the stone should be neither too dark nor too light, when considering a piece. Too dark a hue would be considered a negative and if it’s too light, it’s considered a Pink Sapphire. However, larger, transparent rubies are extremely rare.

Rubies are the second hardest naturally occurring gem, after diamonds, with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.
